The fuller raagmala schemes give each parent raag a set of raagputras — sons, often eight per family. In the painted albums they appear as princes: hunting, at court, in love. Saarey's catalogue ties every son to the parent raag itself, so each family's line passes around the consorts before reaching its sons.
Fewer raagputra names survive in modern performance than raagini names, which makes the painted record especially valuable — for several of these raags, the folio is now the clearest trace of how the tradition imagined them.
