About Raag Kamod
Raag Kamod is a graceful yet complex raag that's quite well-known in the Hindustani classical tradition. It draws from several distinct influences—you can hear traces of Malhaar, Hameer, and Kalyan, along with gentle hints of Kedar and Chhayanut. This blend of styles makes Kamod rich in expression but also tricky to perform smoothly. A key identifying phrase in Kamod is G m P G m R S, often called the Kamod Ang.
The combination of Re and Pa (Rishabh–Pancham sangati) also helps bring out its unique flavor. While Teevra Ma (the sharp Ma) may sometimes appear in phrases like M P D P, it's not always used—some versions might go with G m D P instead, adding to the variation in interpretation. Several characteristic patterns help define the raag: S m R P carries a Malhaar-like feel R R P G m P G m R S is classic Kamod M P D P hints at Kedar G m D D P leans toward Hameer P D P S’ S’ R’ S’ reminds one of Chhayanut S’ R’ S’ S’ D D P echoes the Kalyan mood Together, these phrases form a melodic structure that’s lively, nuanced, and emotionally expressive.
But it’s also this complexity that makes Raag Kamod a challenging and rewarding choice for a thoughtful performance.
