Raag Gorak Kalyan is a lovely Raag in Hindustani classical music, named after its origins in a regional song type from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. Due to its limited resemblance to Kalyan, some musicians prefer to call it Gorak. In this raag, Madhyam is very strong and serves as both the Vadi Swar (principal note) and a resting note, distinguishing it from Raag Narayani, where the Vadi Swar and Nyas Swar (resting note) is Pancham. In Gorak Kalyan, the Komal Nishad of the Mandra Saptak is also a resting note and a main characteristic of the Raag. Nishad is omitted in the Aaroh (ascending scale), setting it apart from Raag Bageshree. However, Komal Nishad is used as an Alp Swar (subordinate note) in the Aaroh, enhancing its beauty, as shown in the phrases, D; n R S; n S R S. While rendering D m, a minute Kan (grace note) of Pancham is allowed, such as D (P)m or m (P)m. However, some musicians differ on this and use Pancham sparingly in Avroh (descending scale). This raag can be expanded in all three octaves and does not have the Kalyan Ang (characteristics of Kalyan). A pleasant and enchanting melodic mood is generated when we develop this raag as follows: S R m R S ,n ; ,D ,n ,D ,D S ; ,D S R ; R R m m R ; m m D ; n n D ; m D m R ; ,n ,D S ; S R m R ; m D S’ ; S’ R’ R’ S’ n D ; m R (P)m R ; ,n ,D S ; S R ,n ,D S ; ,n S R m R ; R m D m ; m D n D ; m D S’ ; n S’ R’ S’ ; D n D m ; m (P)m ; R S ,n ; R ,n ,D S ;
