Ustad Fateh Ali Khan’s in-depth knowledge of the vast sea of classical compositions is arguably unmatched today. True to the Gawaliar Gharana style, his style is renowned for pure and accurate singing and mastery in the nuances of the raag. He takes meticulous care in the precision of the structure and has the rare ability to sing most challenging of raags with ease.
Ustad Fateh Ali Khan is the flag-bearer of the Gawaliar Gharana music tradition. He is the recipient of the All Pakistan Music Conference (APMC) Lifetime Achievement Award and the Pride of Performance and Sitara-e-Imtiaz – Pakistan’s highest civilian honours – by the Government of Pakistan. He regularly performs internationally, has also performed for the King of Norway and represented Pakistan at the UNO.
Ustad Fateh Ali Khan is a direct descendent of Ustad Nathan Khan – the founding father of the Gawaliar Gharana. He received his primary musical education from his father Ustad Ghulam Rasool Khan, his paternal uncle (taya) Ustad Umeed Ali Khan and his maternal uncle (mamoo) Ustad Manzoor Ali Khan, all well respected musicians in the Pakistani-Indian subcontinent. Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (Gawaliar) continued in the line of his forefathers and started performing on stage from an early age. His earliest performances were on Radio Pakistan.
