The Ustad Amanat Ali Khan (1932 – 1974) & Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (1935 – 2017) singing duo became celebrities across the Pak-Indo subcontinent while still in their teens. They are arguably one of the finest Pakistani classical music singing duo in living memory.

The brothers became the chosen singers in the court of the Maharaja of Patiala in 1946. After partition of the Pak-Indo subcontinent, for their services to the Pakistan Army Jawans on the front line, they were awarded the Tamgha e Khidmat (TK Class 1) in 1966, the only artists to ever receive this award. For their contributions Pakistani classical music, the duo was awarded the Pride of Performance, the highest civilian honour, by the Government of Pakistan in 1969.
Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (Patiala) was the flag-bearer of the Patiala Gharana music tradition until he passed away in 2017.

Ustad Amanat Ali Khan & Ustad Fateh Ali Khan were renowned for their Khayal, Thumri and Ghazal singing but were an equally proficient in Kafi, Pahari, Dadra and playblack singing.
The duo were wonderfully complimentary in their singing styles. Ustad Amanat Ali Khan generally sang in the higher octave while his younger brother Ustad Fateh Ali Khan sang in a deep voice in the lower octave. The former simplified the structure of the raag while the latter engaged in intricacies of the raag and the complexity of the taan.

Ustad Amanat Ali and Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (Patiala) were born in the city of Patiala, India. They were the direct descendent of the founder of the Patiala Gharana. They were the sons of Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan who was an accomplished musician himself, the grandsons of ‘General’ Ali Baksh Khan, a sublime musician in his own right, and the great grandsons of Mian Kallu Jee, the founder of the Patiala Gharana. After partition of the Pak-Indo Subcontinent, they chose to migrate to Lahore, Pakistan in 1947. They received their primary music education from their father.
Ustad Amanat Ali Khan is the father of Amjad Amanat Ali, Asad Amanat Ali & Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan. Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (Patiala) is the father of Sultan Fateh Ali Khan and Rustam Fateh Ali Khan. Both are elder brothers of Ustad Hamid Ali Khan.
