Who is Hazrat Amir Khusro?
Hazrat Amir Khusro is a South Asian classical music artist known for Qawwal Bacha / Delhi, Khayal, Vocal.
Hazrat Amir Khusro (1253 - 1325) was the inventor of Pakistani classical music as we know of it today. He defined the 12 notes (surs), the Thaat system, the genres of Khayal, Qawwali, Ghazal and Tarana. Invented Raag Aiman, Yaman, Sazgigi and many others. He is the founder of the Qawwal Bacha gharana and nearly all of Pakistani classical music can be traced back to him.
Accroding to Mr. Masood Akhar Sheikh, Officer on special duty at the Music Research Cell at Radio Pakistan, Lahore, Hazrat Amir Khusro was not aware of the Vedic principles of Indian music as it was guarded by Hindus and no one dared to teach him. He therefore classified popular raags on the basis of the Makam system from his knowledge of Muslim Persian music and classified 12 notes (surs) into the Naghma. Though these notes were given Vedic names, the actual sounds were significantly different from the original Vedic sounds. This new system is the Thaat system we know of today.
